Here’s an easy way to get rid of fruit flies, and turn it into an interactive learning experience for your kids.
- Start by pouring one cup of apple cider vinegar into a mason jar.
- Add a couple drops of dish soap.
- Put a layer of tin foil over the jar, and secure it with a ring. Poke holes in the tin foil.
- Cover it with another layer of tin foil, secure with a rubber band and poke more holes.
As you do all of this, you could talk with your kids about the engineering of the trap. It’s a simple way for them to build confidence in themselves as they learn about engineering.
You could take it a step further by video taping the entire process, and you could teach them about the elements of a successful video. What is a “hook” and how do we grab people’s attention? What is a “call to action” and what do we want people to do after they watch the video? You could point out that they see this all the time when people says, “like and subscribe.”
This is an example of how homeschool parents take any activity and turn it into a learning experience. It could be completely informal or more calculated, like our Engineering curriculum available to all our members.
