With the new school year approaching, it’s time to focus on record-keeping. Each state in the US (and province in Canada) has their own regulations for operating a homeschool. Before filing your notice of intent, check out the HSLDA website, and make sure you understand all the laws for homeschooling in your state.
Some states have very few requirements, while others are more strict. Most states will at least want you to keep attendance records, vaccination records, and take a standardized test. No one typically asks to see these things, but you will need them if your child is enrolled in a public or private school the following year. Even if your state doesn’t require you keep these records, it’s still a good idea to keep your ducks in a row. This will help you stay on track and you will look more competent should your homeschool be chosen for an audit.
The first thing you need to record is attendance. You have to make sure you meet the state- required number of course hours. Document subjects covered, materials used, any grades given, and copies of your child’s work in their portfolio. TurboScan is a perfect app for keeping all those writing assignments and artwork! Document all the field trips and extracurricular activities.
